Agenda Items:
=============================================================

Meeting began with a gentlemen (KB8RIV) talking to us about SHARES in the
state and how or why we should be working with them in Emergency Situations.

Meeting began ?Officially? at 1225 EDT when Jay took over the meeting.

Jay began with setting up a simple TNC setup and gave a talk on how to trouble
shoot one. Talked about the KISS idea we have been talking about now since
 the inception of the DRG.

In Attendance-

Marty Mendelson, N8MG
Red Duggan, WA8RLI
Rick Mark, WZ8N
Ron Schulot, N8CML
Dave Stein, N8WVI
John McDonough, WB8RCR
Ray Larabee, N8LRF
Don LaBarne, WB8I
Ed Galipeau, WA1LRL
Jon Harris, KC8VAB
Jay Nugent, WB8TKL
Dean Bass, KC8BGK

1) Training session:

      a) The "Simplistic Approach" - basic TNC commands
EFK: "major thrust is getting people to learn the packet basics"

Working from the Command Prompt.
Basic Help Command (I.E. ? H P gives a display and explanation of
 the ?P? command Ports.)

      b) Demo a HamGate to show the benefits of JNOS HamGates
to connect disperse parts of the network

          A) Use of NetROM across TCP/IP backbone

          B) Mail forwarding across backbone

      c) Current network topologies across the State
          What do we have now?

          What do we need/want?

2) Working Group Reports:
       o Networking
          - Must know what's out there...
...so update the Node database data & Network Maps

We have fallen behind in getting the information from across the state so
that we can fill in the blanks and begin setting up some of the other items
within this sub-group and the other sub-groups.

          - Digi, NetROM, TCP/IP, BBS mail forwarding

          - "Layered" network topology

          - Individual county LANs (requires frequency coordination)

          - Need someone to head an "Email Engineering" taskforce
Work with both MSYS and JNOS

       o Frequency Coordination
          - Must know what's out there...
...so update the Node database data & Network Maps

See the above item. Again we need to update the main database so that we have
 a baseline to work from.

          - Frequencies recognized by the MARC (handout)

See the handout

          - Frequencies currently in use and where?
               Again...update the Node database!

       o Operational Standards
          - District "Standards", are we ready to commit?
              Publish "living documents" on website

WB8RCR will be working on a frame work ?PLAN? so that we at minimum have
something to work from such that people can begin to envision where we are
 going.

       o Training
          - In what areas do we need more training?
What is holding us back from completing a network?

We all agree after the nearly two hour discussion at the beginning of the
meeting that some form of further training is available.
Types of training being considered are a low level (local) simple Packet
 understanding.
Next level will be a District/Node or Sysop level of training

   3) Go around the room answering:
o "What is the status of my Districts network?"

N8MG will bring his ?Go-Kit? to the next meeting to show what a high-profile
kit looks like and how it operates.
KC8VAB gave a talk on where District One is going. He will also bring in a
portable station that all at the DRG can see.
WB8TKL gave a talk on where District Two is going
KC8BGK gave a talk on where District Three was at and going
N8CML gave his report on District Five
N8LRF gave his report on District Six
WA8RLI gave his report on District Seven

o "What problem areas are we experiencing?"

o "What are we planning in the near future?"

   4) Misc:
o Should we open meetings to more of the general public?

No at this time. But we do need to worry about low level training as discussed
earlier. If we can and there are technically savy people we would do well to
invite them in to help with getting off the ground.

o Need volunteer to collect EOC Callsigns, Aliases, & Frequencies

Covered in an earlier item.

o Please add your node data to the Node Database (via webpage)
          - Nothing to build maps from if we don't have the data!

Covered in an earlier item.

       o Planning for the upcoming S.E.T. (October 1st & 2nd)
          - Section requests that we test our Packet capabilities

(Fill this in later!!!)

          - Enhances our skills (shows where we need additional training)

          - Gather reports of how well & not so well, we did

o Need more participation in the Working Groups!

o Need LEADERS for each of the Working Groups!
          - Hold regular work sessions

          - Discuss issues via the email list(s)

   5) Set Date and Location of the next Quarterly DRG meeting:
Suggested locations include: Saginaw, Bay City, or Midland

December 10 & 17 or January 7 & 14
January 7, 2005 in Midland 12 to 3

   6) Set "Action Items"
       o Node Database updates!!!

o S.E.T. scenarios to involve Packet

o Each District develop an "Operations Plan for Packet"

o Look at a practical time line for implementation
EFK: "Perhaps now is the time to begin looking at a practical time
line for implementation. Based upon recent history, folks
should have a feel for how long things take and can speak
reasonably about what needs to happen next and when.

No one should be asking for fixed dates, just ranges so
others who need to prepare to interface to a planned system
                 can determine their schedule."

                         === End ===
